How to Get Rid of Car Smoke Smell

How to Get Cigarette Smoke Smell Out of Car

Open The Windows

This probably sounds obvious but the more air the better. Open all the windows and leave them all open overnight if possible.

Vacuum Rug and Upholstery

The next step is to get as much as the surface clean as possible. Vacuum the carpet rug and the upholstery on your seats.

If you have leather seats clean them with a good leather cleaner.

Wash Windows

Again, this is still surface cleaning. You can use Windex or home made window cleaner. Be sure to also do the dashboard and steering wheel.

Clean the Lights

Interior lights attract smoke. Anytime the light goes back on, the smoke smell is redistributed back into the car, so be sure to clean the interior lights as well.

White Vinegar

Put a bowl or two of vinegar in the car overnight. The white vinegar will greatly help to get rid of odor.

Coffee Grounds

Used coffee grounds can also work wonders in getting rid of smoke odor in car. Place grounds in bowels or tie securely in a coffee filter and leave in different places around the car for approximately 24 hours.

Try Citrus Peels or Apples

You can toss a bunch of citrus peels around the car or you can slice up some apples, put them in open bowls and place them around the car. They are both natural odor absorbers.

Bowls of Charcoal

BBQ Charcoal is another great odor absorber. Simply place a few unused charcoals in bowls around the car for 24 hours and the odor should be gone.

Febreze

Febreze Odor Remover works well for cars that have a light cigarette smoke smell. Simply spray on upholstery and carpets.

Vamoose Spray

While Vamoose might be a little on the pricey side, when it comes to getting rid of the cigarette smoke smell from a car nothing works better. Vamoose permanently eliminates the smell of cigarette smoke and other tobacco odors by eliminating the nicotine and tar residue that is deposited from smoke.

(There is a strange smell when you first use it as it interacts with the tar residue but this will disappear very quickly.)

New Car Smell Spray

Vamoose also sells a “new car smell” spray that complements the Vamoose Odor Remover. Most customers swear that the mixture of the two works miracles and really does make the car smell like new. You do not need the Vamoose New Car Smell spray however for the Odor Remover to be effective. There are also cheaper “new car smell” sprays that you can purchase that will probably work just as well.

How to Get Rid of Smoke Smell in House

How to Get Rid Of Cigarette Smoke Smell in the House

How Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke Smell in Houses, Offices or Rooms.

Open Your Windows

This probably seems pretty obvious, but it is the first step when trying to get rid of a cigarette smoke smell.

Be sure to open all the windows in the room to air out the room for awhile.

Any furniture, blankets, cushions or pillows that smell like smoke should also be put outside so they can get as much fresh air as possible.

Clean All Surfaces

This also might seem pretty obvious, but it is pretty much the second thing you will need to do. Be sure to clean down all the major surfaces that smell like smoke.

You can use either store bought Windex or home solution glass cleaner to clean all mirrors and windows.

Use lemon scented furniture polish for the outside of wood furniture then place Bounce fabric softener sheets or wrapped bars of Dial soap inside drawers to freshen them up.

Don’t Forget the Light Bulbs

While commonly overlooked, light bulbs will attract cigarette smoke at the time that someone is smoking. When the lights are turned on again they will actually redistribute the smoke smell back into the room. So while doing your surface cleaning, be sure not to forget your bulbs.

White Vinegar

White Vinegar is great for so many household cleaning remedies and it works great for stale cigarette smell as well. Simply fill a few bowls or drinking glasses with white vinegar and place them around the room for approximately 24 hours.

Charcoal

Charcoal is another easy way to deodorize a room of cigarette smell. Again, simply fill a few bowls with charcoal, place them around the room and leave them out overnight.

Ammonia

Ammonia is another great deodorizer. Do not use this remedy however if the you have pets or children because consumption of ammonia is very dangerous. But putting out bowls of ammonia will work just as effectively as white vinegar or charcoal.

Use Baking Soda

Baking Soda is another great item to have around the house because it has so many cleaning uses. It is wonderful for removing cigarette smell from carpets, couches, pilllows, cushions and more. (Be sure to test sample areas however to ensure it will not discolor your items.)

After you have tested sample areas, sprinkle the baking soda around, let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum with your vacuum cleaner (it will help the vacuum cleaner smell better as well).

Don’t Forget Your Walls

Stale cigarette smoke will settle on walls as well, so it is important to wash down your walls to get your room completely smell free.

For Wood Walls: you can use oil soap to wash down the wood, or a cleaner you regularly use – that can be followed up by Lemon Pledge (NEVER use Pledge on wood floor however – very slippery – and again test a small area before using Pledge to ensure no discoloration of your wood.)

For Painted Walls: Mix 1 gallon of warm water, 1/2 cup plain ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar, and 1/4 cup washing soda (can be found in most laundry aisles of your supermarket).

For Wallpapered Walls: Depending on the type of wallpaper you have, the same mixture for painted walls could also be used. Just keep in mind that sturdier wallpapers can handle getting wet, but older or thinner wallpaper might tear or peel.

Vamoose

While Vamoose is a product you need to buy (and it is a little pricey), it gets rid of cigarette smoke smell like nothing else can. It permanently eliminates the smell of cigarette smoke and other tobacco odors by eliminating the nicotine and tar residue that is deposited from smoke.

(You may notice a strange smell when you first use it as it interacts with the tar residue but this will disappear very quickly.
