Clean up as much of the mess from the carpet as possible using a spoon, spatula or butter knife. DO NOT RUB stain because you might rub it further into the carpet. Then blot up as much of the liquid as possible with white paper towels to get out all of the liquid.
Cover the stain with a small mountain of baking soda and leave overnight if possible to give it time to absorb the remaining moisture and to deodorize the scent. The next day vacuum the spot.
Corn Starch will also work when it comes to getting the moisture out, so if you don’t have baking soda apply a small mountain of Corn Starch and follow the directions listed above.
20 Mule Team Borax
Again, clean up as much of spot that you can using a spatula spoon or butter knife, then use paper towels to absorb most of the moisture. Then dissolve one teaspoon of Borax in two cups of water. Use a sponge to apply the solution to the carpet – then blot dry. If any stain remains, try rubbing some foamy shaving cream into the stain.
Club soda is especially effective if the vomit stain on carpet contains color, Clean up as much of the stain as possible, than pour some club soda on the stain and blot with white towels or white paper towels until the stain is gone. The carbonation in the club soda is what will help lift the stain.
Ammonia also works well for cleaning vomit from a carpet. (Do not use this solution however on woolen carpets or rugs.) Add 5 teaspoons of ammonia to one cup of water – mix well – and use a sponge to apply the mixture to the stain. Then blot dry. You might need to do this more than once.
Water, Dishwashing Liquid and White Vinegar
Another way to remove vomit from a carpet is to clean up as much of the mess as possible then blot any remaining moisture with white paper towels or white absorbent cloth. Be sure to use a lot of pressure to get down deep into the carpet.
Apply warm water to the area (not too hot) then re-blot area with white paper towels or cloth.
If you still have some kind of stain add 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing liquid to a quart of warm water and treat the area again. Being sure to blot up well.
If there is still a spot remaining mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar to one quart of water. Use a white cloth to apply this solution – then another dry white paper towel or cloth to blot very well, again pressing down deep to get to the bottom of the carpet.
If you have children or pets, chances are these situations will occur more than once. It is probably a good idea to invest in an enzyme cleaner that is especially good for stains and smells on rugs. Nature’s Miracle and Woolite Oxydeep are two of the best products for these kind of situations and will definitely be worth the investment. Simpy follow the directions on the packaging.
* Dry Well
After you have applied any of the above treatments it is a good idea to really get any remaining moisture out of the carpet. Place a heavier white towel over area and place a heavy object such as a large book on top of it to get out all remaining liquid. Vacuum the next day to restore the pile.
