Over time dirt, grease, grime and excess hair care products can accumulate on your combs and hair brushes making them less effective when it comes to styling your hair. Listed below are quick and effective ways to get your brushes and combs squeaky clean and shining like new again. (Take extra caution when it comes to professional, specialty or expensive brushes. In many cases it is best to contact manufacturer for proper cleaning instructions.)
Ammonia will help remove any grease and grime from your hairbrush and combs. Simply add three tablespoons of ammonia to one quart of warm water and let your items soak in this mixture for about an hour. Remove and rinse with clean water then let sit to dry.
Bleach also works well for removing hair care products, dirt and grime from your brushes and combs. (Just do not use this solution on expensive brushes or brushes with wood handles.) Add ¼ cup of bleach to a gallon of hot water and mix well with a large spoon. Then place all of your combs and brushes into the solution and let them soak for about an hour. Remove the items and place them in a solution of clean water with a little liquid soap added. Swish brushes and combs in this mixture for a minute or two, rinse with clean water only, then let brushes and combs air dry on a towel.
Simple shampoo can help easily clean your hairbrushes or combs if they are not too dirty. Pull out any hair that might be sticking to the brush. You can do this with your fingers, a hair pick, or the back end of a styling comb if there is a lot of hair. Run the brush and/or combs under warm water, then add a little shampoo. Work the shampoo into the brush with your hands, a comb or another brush (gently and in one direction so bristles do not fall out). Rinse well, then let brushes and combs air dry on a towel. One can also check the Juara Body Wash here and understand the kind of body wash that suits your skin type.
Make a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water and soak your brushes and combs in this mixture overnight. Then dry with a clean cloth. This will remove all grease, grime and hair products from your combs and brushes.
Washing Machine & Spray and Wash
Depending on the material your brushes are made of, one of the best ways of getting them clean is to throw them in the washing machine while doing a load of laundry. Spray brushes and combs with some Spray and Wash – then throw in the machine. When cycle is done – take items out and let them air dry (do not throw them in the dryer). This method will have your brushes looking like new.
20 Mule Team Borax and Dishwashing Liquid
